Following the 5.0 Mustang drag test in Cars Illustrated Vol 5 No 6, the world wanted more and more Mustang content.  Each subsequent issue featured Mustang speed tips, driving tips, and the latest parts to make your new Ford quicker in the quarter.  The 5.0 movement became so obvious to the Cars Illustrated staff that they launched a one-off featuring the new Mustang.  That issue of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords launched a magazine icon that latest for several decades.

With the success that the Cars Illustrated editorial staff was having with the 5.0 Ford Mustang, it made sense to try a single issue dedicated to this car.  There were older Mustang feature cars in this magazine, but readers flipped right past them to get to the technical articles on how to make there then-new 5.0 Mustangs faster in the quarter mile.
