Speed Parts Review: Powermaster Mastertorque Starter 9612

Big Block + Big Power = Need Big Starter

Having lots of friends building lots of cars makes it easy to find homes for great products and this product review is no different…enter our friend Dave and his ’55 Del Ray. Powered by a 496 Big-Block Chevy, this Del Ray was in need of a starter that would not leave him stranded and we reached out to Powermaster for the right starter for the job and they provided us with a Mastertorque Starter 9612 to handle the job.

The Mastertorque Starter is an great choice for mild to high performance street or track cars where defeating heat soak is a high priority. The 9612 features an 4.4:1 gear reduction ratio and 180 ft. lbs. of torque along with an adjustable mounting block and will clear headers and oil pans where original equipment starters will not. Tough enough to handle engines with compression as high as 14.0:1. Beyond the cranking power one of the biggest assets the 9612 bring to the table is the ability to be mounted in multiple positions, even inverted with the solenoid down if you happen to have that extra tricky header set up. They can be had in black wrinkle finish and some are available in a chrome plated finish for those who like the underside to sparkle.
